The red cell membrane skeleton: recent progress.

چکیده

I T IS WIDELY believed that the lipid bilayer of the erythrocyte membrane is supported by an elaborate infrastructure of protein molecules that give it viscoelastic properties. The proteins that provide this function are popularly referred to as the “membrane skeleton.” This membrane skeleton is considered to be distinct from the so-called “cytoskeleton,” a term used by cell biologists to describe the complex array of tubes and fibers that connect different parts of cells to each other and to the membrane. In most cells the cytoskeleton is clearly involved with the maintenance of cell shape and probably also plays a role in cell movement. It is assumed that connections exist between the cytoskeleton and the membrane skeleton in cells that have both, but nonnucleated red cells rely solely on the membrane skeleton to confer shape and stability. Perhaps for this reason, membrane skeletons of red cells are elaborately engineered, multiprotein complexes.

Anatomy of the red cell membrane skeleton: unanswered questions.

The red cell membrane skeleton is a pseudohexagonal meshwork of spectrin, actin, protein 4.1R, ankyrin, and actin-associated proteins that laminates the inner membrane surface and attaches to the overlying lipid bilayer via band 3-containing multiprotein complexes at the ankyrin- and actin-binding ends of spectrin. The membrane skeleton strengthens the lipid bilayer and endows the membrane with...

Membrane skeleton and red blood cell vesiculation at low pH.

Shapes of red blood cells at low pH were studied theoretically. It is assumed that the equilibrium shape of the red blood cell corresponds to the minimum of its membrane elastic energy which consists of the bending energy and relative stretching energy of the bilayer, the stretching energy of the skeleton and the interaction energy between the skeleton and the bilayer. It is shown that the aggr...

Recent Progress on Improving the Sustainability of Membrane Fabrication

Although the membrane process is recognized as a green technology and is considered as a key player in the process intensification movement, it is not widely known that the fabrication of membrane itself generates significant amount of waste. With the growing membrane market, more efforts must be placed on improving the sustainability of membrane fabrication such as replacing toxic organic solv...

Red cell membrane protein abnormalities as defined by sds-page among patients with anaemia in a west african region hospital practice

Background: Erythrocytes require an ability to deform and to withstand shear stress while negotiating the microcirculation. These properties are largely due to their excess surface area per volume and the characteristics of the membrane’s protein. Deficiencies of these proteins are associated with chronic haemolysis. Methods: This was a cross sectional  study aimed at determining the prevalenc...

Carbon membranes for gas separation processes: Recent progress and future perspective

Carbon membrane can be produced using a wide variety of polymer precursor materials via heat treatment process. A general concept route of precursor selection-preparation-modification-performance analysis platform for the carbon membrane has been proposed to promote the development of carbon membrane material for a wide range of application. The current review considers the recent progress of c...
